In order to monitor the effectiveness of my teaching material and delivery, I believe in cultivating a good working relationship with each student, utilizing classroom assessment techniques throughout a course. When students have the opportunity to give constructive criticism and experience the resulting improvements, everyone benefits. Positive morale is established, ensuring that each student thoroughly understands the material and can apply what he or she is learning to his or her individual artistic goals.
For students to fully explore the possibilities of their application of materials and the concepts presented, their education must be well rounded. It is crucial that they become aware of not only themselves, but also their communities and the world in which they live. By encouraging research in all areas of the arts and sciences, as well as world events, I believe students develop critical thinking abilities and see a maturation of their artwork.
An early introduction to the professional practices of the art world, including grant and scholarship application preparation, exhibition applications and self-promotion, is incredibly valuable for young artists. When students are required to apply for opportunities and guided through the process the entire ordeal seems less intimidating and they or more likely to pursue opportunities on their own. Students who possess a thorough knowledge of technical processes, professional practices and conceptual exploration will develop the confidence and ambition needed to pursue their artistic visions outside of their classroom environments.
